my thoughts. exactly. |
February 13, 2004 Friday the 13th = my lucky day Ahhhh... I look forward to this occurence every year! Usually, weird things, but good ones, happen to me on days like today so I'm wondering what kind of weirdness I'll encounter today.... Good Wife VS. Bad Wife The good wife has been described to me by a lot of people, mostly elders, as someone who takes care of her husband. Cooks and cleans in preparation for his return from a long, hard day at work. And when he opens the door, she is there waiting with open arms and lips pursed ready to plant that kiss on his cheek. She will bear his kids and take care of them. She will support him in whatever endeavor he goes into. So anything contrary to that can be considered not up to par. Does that mean that working wives who cannot be home to prepare meals, and clean, and greet their husbands with open arms are considered 'bad wives'? I'm sure a lot of you would say, certainly not. But a lot of you also don't consider the fact that women nowadays are not made just for housework and to bear children. Some. But not all. Take for instance this working woman. Wakes up at 5 AM to get ready for work so she can get in at say 8 AM. Gets to the office to be greeted by emails, voicemails, and messages passed to her by the secretary. If she's lucky, she can stop by the cafeteria to get some coffee and maybe something quick to eat. If she's not so lucky, then maybe she'll just have enough time to put down her purse, take her coat off, then head to a meeting. and then to another meeting. and then to another meeting... before you know it, lunch is nothing but a powerbar, and it's 5 PM. You'd think it's time to head home but really its time to head back to her desk to return all the emails and phone calls she couldn't get to before she headed to her meetings. If she's lucky again, she'll have enough energy to stop by the gym and work out a bit. Or, I wouldn't call it 'not lucky', she could be invited to dinner or drinks by coworkers or clients prior to heading home. If she goes to the gym, she's heading home at about 7:30. If she goes to dinner/drinks, then she's not heading home until 9 PM which means her car won't be parked in the driveway until 10 PM. Granted not everyday is like this but most days are. And there's no complaining here since this working woman enjoys her job very much. She faces every challenge presented to her and actually walks away with things accomplished. And as the challenges get tougher, she gets tougher. She doesn't bail when things seem hopeless. She's smart enough to recognize the fact that she can't do things and she is willing to admit this instead of pointing the blame elsewhere. And her peers applaud her for this. Coz they know what kind of worker she is and that she will continue on until she can't go any further. What was I just talking about again? Oh, my bad. So yah, I don't think we should pass judgement on working women, or working wives even. At the end of the day, there are still dirty dishes to be washed, floors to be swept, beds to be done, meals to be cooked, etc... probably most of it waiting for her. And if she chooses to hire someone to do it for her so that she may relax and spend some quality time with her family, don't crucify her. She's earned the right to do so. And the money to pay for it all.
